We recommend our expat health insurance as a great way to get private coverage while you are getting settled in the Netherlands.

Here are some important things to know about eligibility for expat health insurance in the Netherlands:

  • If you’ve recently relocated to the Netherlands and are looking for a temporary health insurance plan, you're eligible for expat health insurance.

  • If you are job seeking, you can generally stay on expat health insurance. Once you find employment, you are required to switch to statutory Dutch health insurance.

  • Most people must switch to statutory Dutch health insurance within 4 months of registering in the Netherlands.

  • If it has been determined that you aren’t required to have Dutch statutory insurance, you can stay on expat health insurance for up to 5 years from your arrival date in the Netherlands.

  • If you are a student, you can use expat health insurance for the duration of your studies without having to switch to statutory Dutch health insurance.

Please note that expat health insurance is not a replacement for Dutch statutory health insurance. Failure to be correctly insured could result in a fine. If you are not sure if you must have Dutch health insurance, you can use this tool provided by the Dutch Government to confirm.
